Green Shopping Websites

January 29th, 2010

I recently posted a list about green gift ideas. This post is similar, but not requiring any work besides entering your credit card number. I wanted a list of green websites a person can shop for knowing they are getting earth friendly products.

1. LetsGoGreen.biz: I happened across this website when typing in “green products.” This website has everything from pet products to home products. It will definitely be cool to keep an eye on any trendy green products that come to market.

2. greenhome.com:  I liked how this website lists different resolutions and green deals at the bottom.  Another feature I like is the house graphic that you can click on to give you ways you can green the different locations of your house.

3.  modernartisans.com:  I liked the idea of a website of American made products/gifts.  There are some great artsy gift ideas for almost everyone on your list.

4.  EarthLover:  I really liked the look of this website.  It makes me want to stay a while and click around.  They are also labeled Fair Trade gift sellers.

5.  uncommongoods.com:  this website offers gifts made from reused or reclaimed materials.  I liked the wide variety of gifts to choose from.  These are gifts you would want to showcase in your home.

If you know of any other websites that offer reused, recycled, fair trade or American made products, please leave us a comment below.

Green Companies Exercise

January 22nd, 2010

I am going to do a little challenge with myself.  I want to list some companies that I believe are green.  After that, I will research these companies to see what they do, if anything, to be green.  It will be interesting to see if what I believe is actually true.  I will not select companies in this exercise that I know make green products because that would be obvious.

Here is my list:  Lexus (automakers), Sun Chips, Renold’s (aluminum foil), Shape (magazine), Starbucks, and DELL.

Ok, I must admit some of these companies were brands that I selected by glancing around the room, but that will make it fun to learn something new.

1.  I heard something about Lexus going green but I don’t remember what it was.  What I learned from their website is that they reuse scraps from cushions and liners as sound insulation.  They reduce water and energy usage and have a zero landfill waste status.  They reduce, reuse or recycle 98 percent of all manufacturing leftovers.  They even plan reduce their energy consumption even more by 18% in 2011 when compared to 2001.

2. SunChips: what I understand about this company is that they are making their packaging compostable and that they run on wind energy.  I was correct in the compostable wrappers guess.  Also, 33% of every 10 1/2 oz bag of chips is made with renewable, plant based materials.  In 2010, on Earth Day,  they are set to release their first fully compostable bag, that will decompose in 14 weeks. They also helped rebuild Greensburg Kansas that was once destroyed by a tornado in a green way.  Solar power is one main source of energy in the production of SunChips.  That is a big step to a healthier planet.

3.   Reynold’s:  I seen a commercial advertising a recycled Reynold’s product.  It looks like their foil is 100% recycled aluminum and even the paperboard is 100% recycled.  After doing some more browsing on their site I found a Greening Your Kitchen tab including tips on going green from Sara Snow.  My only suggestion is that they should make these links easier to find instead of having to dig around.

4.  Shape: I am a subscriber to this magazine so I appreciate all of the green tips throughout.  Instead of finding information online, I actually dug out my new copy and read their statement at the beginning.  They state that they are the top user of recycled content for any North American women’s lifestyle magazine.  They average 305,000 pounds of post consumer waste is used and that saves 17,723 trees.

5.  Starbucks: I know that Starbucks sells fair trade coffee but I was wondering if they did more than that.  Their website is actually pretty cool.  They have videos and ways to interact with the site.  They support the local community, they encourage the use of ceramic or reusable mugs, they use LED energy efficient lighting, recycled materials, and building materials and they also allow you to take home used coffee grounds for your soil.

6.  Dell: Dell offers free computer recycling to worldwide customers; they recovered 100 million pounds in 2007 alone.  You can also donate your computer to underprivileged children and adults.  This is awesome; on their site they track how much CO2 they avoided, which is updated every other second.  So far they are at 41,202,094 tons.    During the year 2009 they completed 88 energy efficiency tasks from changing their light bulbs, temperature adjustments and upgrading their HVAC systems.

This is quite an interesting bit of information and I am glad I completed this exercise.  Learning what companies are doing to go green will help us select which changes we want to make.   Since this is part of Ben’s challenge, he will in the end select which company we will trade in our traditional purchases with a more green selection.   Are you purchasing from companies specifically because they are green over their non-green competitor?  Please leave us a comment below.

Green Gift Giving

January 13th, 2010

There is always a time where you need to give a gift, not just around Christmas.  After Christmas, though, I started thinking of different types of gifts I can either make by hand, re- purpose or reduces the amount of waste created by purchasing.   I came up with a small list, that I can start working on earlier in the year, but even if I need to buy a birthday gift, I will have this list handy.

1.  First thing, is one thing I rely on when it get’s close to the deadline; giftcards.  These things are very green.   They come with either a trifold, which is already wrapped, or without.  Even with out it, you can just throw it in a card and call it done.

2.  You can buy the recipient a book.  I think this is a very good idea because there really are indefinate number of books you can purchase, for any reader.  Plus don’t come with any extra packaging.

3.  Re-purpose all of those Christmas cards or Birthday cards into something useful.  You can make them into postcards, stationary, gift tags or even a set of Christmas ornaments.

4.  Knit a scarf.  Usually around winter anyone can use one of these.  Knitting may be a hard skill to learn, but once you learn, you never forget.  Plus there are a wide array of patterns or gift ideas you can use to make for people.

5.  You can also make a quilt or other bedding.  All you need is a sewing machine and several types of fabric.  You can also use any left over fabric from other projects you may have lying around.

6.  Make a wooden picture frame.  We are lucky to have a local Habitat ReStore in our area you can purchase scrap wood or any other materials at cheap prices. This is just a different type of thrift stores, and you can keep an eye out for items someone you care about is looking for.  Making picture frames may take some patience, but it doesn’t require a lot of hardware to complete.  We purchased a miter saw, a manual one, and most of the picture frame material you can find at a hobby store.

7.  Homemade cooked goodies.  Who doesn’t like getting fresh baked cookies or a pie.  I have even seen in stores all of the dry ingredients for a particular recipe in a Ball canning jar; including a recipe.  This would be a unique way to personalize something.  Plus you can buy the jars at a local thrift store so you don’t have to spend unnecessarily.

8.  You can also make a one of a kind photo book from one of many online companies.  You don’t have to go out and drive anywhere to purchase.  You can stay in the comfort of your own home and design.  Some companies like Shutterfly, Snapfish and Kodak are just a couple out there to check out.  They all offer a slightly different product.

That is my list of possible gifts I will be revisiting this year when I need an idea.  This only includes purchased or homemade goods, you could always offer your services like babysitting or yard work.    The possibilities are absolutely endless.  I would love to hear of your creative ideas on gifts you have given.
