What are some ways to cut back on electricity costs

January 5th, 2011

I understand that electricity/heat are one of the major bills of the household.  I know that pretty well because our heat bill usually creeps up to $400 during the harsh winter months.  We are currently in that part of the year so I want to get some ideas on how to cut back on our electricity; not only to save money but to be green.  Here is a short list that I compiled to get you started.

1. Obviously turning off the lights is first and foremost.

2.  Do you really need the TV on all night while you are on Facebook too?  Pick up a book instead.

3.  Pack your freezer/fridge so it’s full.   If there is a lot of space, fill milk jugs with water and fill the voids.

4.  Use a toaster oven for your smaller baking needs.  It costs a fourth as much to operate a toaster oven than a stove.

5.  Set your thermostat to a lower temperature during the day when you are gone and at night.

6.  Hang your clothes outside.  It costs approximately $0.35 to dry a load of clothes.  If all Americans would use the clothesline or wooden drying racks, the savings would be enough to close several power plants.

7.  Change all of your light bulbs to Compact Florescent.  This is a pretty visual statistic: If every American home replaced just one light with a light that’s earned the ENERGY STAR, we would save enough energy to light 3 million homes for a year, save about $600 million in annual energy costs, and prevent 9 billion pounds of greenhouse gas emissions per year, equivalent to those from about 800,000 cars.

8.  Christmas time is now over, but with the holiday season, some of us like to decorate with lights!  Here is an energy calculator if you are wondering how much those lights add to your energy bill each month.

9. Change out the air filter on your heater.  This will keep your furnace running at it’s top efficiency and the furnace will last longer.  It also will cut back on energy bills.

10.  Open windows instead of turning on the air conditioner.  Also keep the area around the air conditioner clean so that air flow is better.  Good maintenance will help the longevity.

Do you want to take this even further?  Why not do some of these steps at work?  Turn off your computer while you are away from your desk.  Turn off lights in rooms that aren’t used often.  Change out any inefficient lights and use fans to circulate the heat and air conditioning.   I would like the company I work for to become more green.  I am thinking about making a suggestion to them on simple changes.    Did you make any changes at work?  Are they a green company?  If so, what are they doing to reduce their impact?  Please leave me a comment below.    Thanks for visiting!

Plans for the New Year!

January 2nd, 2011

It has been a while since I/we have blogged.  I have been a little behind on my research on going green.  I want to get back into learning how to be a greener consumer.   For now, we will not have the same format as we originally planned.  Ben has a lot of projects he is working on, so I will be doing some research/writing for a little bit until we can get back on track.

Did you have a Green Christmas?  I originally intended on making all of my Christmas gifts, or finding gifts at Thrift Stores that I can reuse.  I didn’t do that as I planned.  This Christmas season came up so fast that I just didn’t have time.   However, I did make some last minute gifts (truffles) and I had purchased some cute jars with a clip top that I gave as gifts.  They were unique and reusable.  The gift recipients will be able to use the jars again for whatever they would like, so there is really no waste on those gifts.   Throughout this year I will be working on making gifts that I can give this year and I will blog about my progress.  I still intend on making my own paper from all of the wrapping paper scraps that we have from 2009′s Christmas.  I am proud to announce that from the 2009′s scraps, I was able to wrap all of my gifts this year with just what I salvaged.

There are also things that I want to accomplish this year.  First, I want to make all of my gifts this year.  This may be difficult because I have a niece and nephew that may not appreciate homemade gifts, but would prefer toys.  I also have male family members that will be hard to make gifts for.  I will see this as a challenge I will overcome.    Second, I want to help one friend recycle.  I already talked to my friend about this idea and she will get back to me.  To me, recycling is really important for our future generations.  These things that we recycle not only become new items, but also reduces the amount of garbage we bring to the landfill-thus releasing less methane into the atmosphere.    Third, I would like to create even less waste than we already do.  I want to do this by really focusing on packaging on the products that we buy.  If you think about it, packaging may actually add cost to the items we buy.  Reducing packaging may help us save money.  I will keep you up to date on my research here.

I guess a few of these things will become my resolutions.  Do you have any green resolutions.  I would love to hear them if you can leave me a comment below.  Thanks for coming back to our blog.

10 weeks down! Recycling Christmas wrapping in review

December 28th, 2009

It has been a great holiday week for us and I hope you all had a great one as well.  I could think of nothing better to do with our free time than to spend it with friends and family.  Even though we may have had a break from work, there is no break for going green.  This week’s green challenge was to recycle as much Christmas wrapping paper as possible.  It has been challenging, since we have a pretty large family, but have really enjoyed following through on this task.

We took in 12 garbage bags of wrapping, bows, boxes and miscellaneous junk.  Of that, we have been able to reduce the actual scrap down to 3 bags that we will need to find creative uses for.  I think we are going to try and make some homemade paper out of that and I will make sure to keep you all up to date with our progress on that.

We collected a pile of wrapping paper and tissue that we will be able to use throughout the year.  Also, we now have a box of ribbons and bows that will be usable for us throughout the year.  We did have a small amount of actual garbage that we had to throw away and some newspaper we put into the recycle bin.

Thanks for following us this week and let me know your green Christmas story in the comments area below.  Also, stay tuned for this week’s green challenge that will be posted later today.
