Green Gardening

February 10th, 2010

Now is the time to start thinking about what we intend to plant this year in our garden. Ben and I were new to gardening last year and we enjoyed it and decided to get a bigger plot to plant on. Last year we took a small portion of our parent’s public garden. This year we’re going to go it alone. We will be better prepared this year than we were last year.

First, we have the necessary tools for the work part.  We accumulated the digging tools that we need to get our seeds sewn.  Second, we will have some compost we have accumulated over the winter from our NatureMill composters.  This will hopefully help our garden be more plentiful.  Third, I harvested seeds from our produce last year so we won’t have to purchase many seeds.  Finally, we have started to purchase second hand canning equipment so we can preserve our tomatoes.  I have a pretty good selection of jars, we just need the larger stuff to complete our needs.  We learned how to can tomatoes last year with help from my parents, and intend to can a larger supply of tomatoes this year.

Another new thing we will try this year is a vertical garden.  Last year we planted some morning glories on the east side of our house, and will use the same twine to plant some vegetables.  I noticed that cantaloupe and cucumbers were good climbers.  Since our back yard has an oak tree canopy this is the only option if we want to have vegetables at our house.  I love the idea of walking outside to pick some veggies for our stew.  I also want to try an indoor herb garden when the weather warms up.  If you have any tips for new gardeners going green please leave us a comment below.

Rethinking my recycling habits

February 9th, 2010

This week’s green challenge is to find something new to recycle.  Fortunately, we really do not send that much out in the trash anymore, so I am not quite sure where to go and thought I might try and ask my readers for any suggestions.  I am going to list some of the garbage items we throw away and am looking for any advice you may have.

Bones – Generally, these are chicken bones, as we do not eat that much meat.  Also, we compost quite a bit of our food waste, but we are not supposed to put bones in our NatureMill composter.  Any ideas you could provide on how to recycle this would be appreciated.  I live right across the street from a river… I wonder if it would be environmentally friendly to toss them in the river.

Egg Cartons – We get our egg cartons from the store and I do not believe that these are recyclable in our area.  I wonder if there is a way that I can use these or if someone else can use these.

Certain Containers- We use some containers that we just cannot recycle and cannot find a good use for.  Most of these are raisin packages and frozen yogurt containers.

Plastic Milk Containers – What to do with these suckers?  We keep our green tea containers for certain things, but is there any use for the gallon milk jugs that you can think of?

Our new NatureMill Composter

Our new Nature Mill

Our new Nature Mill

Congratulations Ben and Ashley!  We have reduced the amount of garbage put out on the boulevard dramatically which is great for the environment.   Unfortunately, we have run out of room in our NatureMill composter because of all of the additional food waste we have been saving since we started Guy Goes Green.  So….. We got another one!

Now we have added a NatureMill Pro XE Compost Bin in our family.  Ok, so it might be going a bit far saying that it is a part of our family, but our current composter is something that we utilize every day and I suspect this one will continually used as well, if not more.  There is a difference on how we will use this composter in comparison to the other.  Currently, our other NatureMill composter is kept in the garage and I think we are going to try and keep this one inside so we do not have to run outside as much.

I have to say that the NatureMill has been a really great product for us.  Since we live in a very cold climate (Fargo, ND), traditional composters are not a very good option and the NatureMill composter can be ran inside or outside(even in our cold climate)… as long as you have a plug-in.  We already like the one we have and have been happy with the product and the company.

I am happy we have our new NatureMill composter and might occasionally give you guys a few updates on how it is working, but will definitely give you a full review on how our new Pro XE Compost Bin is working at some point in the future.  If you have a NatureMill or have any questions about it, let me know in the comment area below.
