Saving the environment with your driving habits – Week 5

November 16th, 2009

A new week begins and my new green task is assigned.  My challenge for the week is to drive in a more environmentally fashion.  I think my lovely wife believes I drive like a maniac and that I am wasting all sorts of energy because of how I drive.  While, at the same time, I have other friends who believe I drive like a slow grandmother.  I am torn on what to believe!  What I am not torn on is what I need to do this week.

My job is to investigate and research ways that I can drive or maintain my vehicle in an environmentally responsible manner.  Since I used to travel as part of my job, I do understand that there are some basic things a person can do to increase gas mileage.  I will look into this further and the environmental impact of driving behavior. I am not exactly sure where this week will take me yet, but I may look into road quality as well as driving as a possible factor in increased gas mileage.

I know there are millions of cars on the road and they all impact our environment in one way or another.  From the Hummer to the Prius, I suspect they all have a negative impact on our environment.  How one drives and the maintenance of those vehicles can affect the impact on the environment.  Stick around this week to work through this challenge with me or let me know any tips you might have in the comments area below.

Eye opening statistics on food waste

November 10th, 2009

This week my challenge is to reduce food waste in our household.  While researching this task, I found some eye opening statistics on the way America consumes food.

These are some fairly staggering statistics and I think the purpose of this week’s challenge has changed slightly for me.  I went into this with the thought that I would be trying to find a way to help the environment, but I think this also needs to include a way that we are getting unused food to people who can use it.

Now that I know the WHY of food waste conservation, I will need to figure out the how. We will do what we can to buy only what we will need, reduce the waste of our food purchases and get appropriate food items to those who can use it.  In the comments area below, please let me know if you have any ideas or experiences in regards to non-wasteful food usage, composting and creative ways to preserve food or experience with food pantries.

A few interesting water conservation links

November 6th, 2009

This week, guygoesgreen has been focusing on water conservation around the house.  I may not be the greenest guy in the world, but I am learning and already making a positive impact on the world around me.  Today, I am going to highlight some interesting links that I found relating to water.

Tapit – I just recently found this site.   Tapit is a grassroots sort of operation where they are trying to build a network of café’s and locations where people can refill their water bottles.  The network is still relatively small, but I love the idea of helping people find locations to fill water.  This can help reduce the number of plastic bottles that end up in the landfill.

H2OUSE – This gives users a graphical interface where users can select different areas of the house to learn how they can save water.

100 Ways to conserve water – This is a detailed list of things you can do to save water.  There are 100.  J

Enjoy the links, and please let me know if you have any great water resources in the comments area below.
