A few interesting water conservation links

November 6th, 2009

This week, guygoesgreen has been focusing on water conservation around the house.  I may not be the greenest guy in the world, but I am learning and already making a positive impact on the world around me.  Today, I am going to highlight some interesting links that I found relating to water.

Tapit – I just recently found this site.   Tapit is a grassroots sort of operation where they are trying to build a network of café’s and locations where people can refill their water bottles.  The network is still relatively small, but I love the idea of helping people find locations to fill water.  This can help reduce the number of plastic bottles that end up in the landfill.

H2OUSE – This gives users a graphical interface where users can select different areas of the house to learn how they can save water.

100 Ways to conserve water – This is a detailed list of things you can do to save water.  There are 100.  J

Enjoy the links, and please let me know if you have any great water resources in the comments area below.

24 ways to stop or reuse junk mail

October 29th, 2009

I have learned that over 100 million trees are cut down every year to make junk mail.  Another stat I found is that 44% of all junk mail ends up in the garbage unopened.  To me, this means that 44 million trees are cut down every year for basically no reason at all.  This waste serves no purpose and is such a waste.  Not only is junk mail a waste, it is annoying.  So, the following is a list of interesting things you can do to reuse, recycle and stop junk mail.

  1. Put all of your junk mail in the recycling bin
  2. Go to www.dmachoice.org and sign up to be taken off of mailing lists.  This was fairly easy to do, but not sure on the overall effectiveness.  This does not remove you from mailings with companies you have previously done business with.
  3. As junk mail comes in, contact the individual companies to be taken off of their mailing lists
  4. Via Bohemian revolution – using shredded junk mail as packing material
  5. Via Bohemian revolution – Use it as Easter basket grass
  6. Via Bohemian revolution– Add flour and water to use as paper mache
  7. Via Bohemian revolution – Ask the local animal shelter if they can use it for bedding
  8. Via Bohemian revolution – Give this paper to kids with water colors and glue for art projects
  9. Go to OptOutPrescreen.com or call 888-567-8688 and stop getting junk mail from Credit Cards.  Just a warning that they require you to give your SSN.  I found several sources online indicated that this is a valid way to remove yourself from this list.
  10. Stop getting the phone book. Holy crap, I don’t think I look up 2 numbers a year but get 6 phone books.   What a waste.  I have not done this yet, but will.
  11. If they provide envelopes, remove/hide spam information and reuse the envelope.
  12. Gift Wrap
  13. Use the blank side of any pages for scratch paper
  14. Use the envelopes for holding coupons, seeds, or other small items
  15. Make your own Gift Bag… seriously.
  16. Make a bookmark
  17. Make a Christmas Ornament
  18. Make your own artsy paper
  19. When you sign up for anything, take more precaution to make sure you are not put on their lists.
  20. Find, suggest and support do-not-mail legislation
  21. Use it as mulch
  22. Use it as kitty litter(only 30% though… see comments).  Ok, I am not sure I can get on board with this one, but am very impressed someone is doing this.
  23. Send junk mail back to senderif there is a pre-paid envelope.  I even found some stories of adding as much weight as possible to the return envelope.  This is a little vindictive I suppose, but kind of funny.
  24. Make a junk mail pirate hat or a junk mail Speedo.  I have no plans for either of these, but think they are good ideas anyhow.

Let me know what you think and please add any that you can think of.

Week 1 completed and review – green blog discovery

October 25th, 2009

I made it through week one relatively easy, but have learned quite a bit.  Besides some information overload and late nights tooling around on the internet, I had fun with this task in my venture to go green.  For those who are just joining us, my wife Ashley assigns me a green task every week and it is my job to complete that task.  This weeks task was to start following some green news sites (The Daily Green, Tree Hugger, worldwatch.org) and also to find 3-5 other sites to recommend for Ashley to follow.

The three sites that Ashley gave me really give me a strong background and basis for much of my future work in this area.  All of these sites are updated regularly and contain a wide variety of topics.  I am sure that I will continue to use these sites as regular news source.

I have found 5 additional sites that I will continually follow.  There will likely be some others that follow since I will continue to find ecofriendly resources, but here are the 4 I am going to give to Ashley and also add to an up and coming “Links” page;

Franke James - Franke James’ site is very fun to explore.  She is an author/artist/photographer who compelled me to continue visiting her site with her visual essays.

My Zero Waste - This is a great resource on tips and how to reuse, reduce and recycle the things in our lives.

Go Green Street - This site provides a variety of useful green information that is organized in a manner that is very easy to navigate and a great user experience.

EnviroGadget - Envirogadget is a cool place where I can find and learn about environmentally friendly gadgets.  Possibly where I can get my Christmas list from!

Tiny Farm Blog - This is a cool site that I am not sure I completely relate to, but it definutely fascinates me.  We like to garden and it will be interesting to look into this site further and follow their going-ons.  It looks like they are in Canada, so the weather is likely close to our lovely North Dakota weather.

For those of you who are following this site, I sincerely appreciate it and hope we can continue to entertain.  Stay tuned because I will find out what week 2 has in store for me shortly.  If you have any suggestions for me or Ashley (possibly suggestions for tasks), leave a comment below or contact us at either ben@guygoesgreen.com or ashley@guygoesgreen.com
