Going green and stopping food waste seems easy to me

November 12th, 2009

We are a bit over half way done with this week’s green task of reducing food waste.  The biggest thing I realized is how little I can throw away if I just am a little bit more conscientious about what gets tossed in the garbage.  So far, this week I have learned quite a bit about food waste and also am in the process of taking steps that will help us reduce waste in the future.  I feel that I am on my way to becoming a real green guy.

As I previously posted, American’s throw away 96 Billion pounds of good food every year.  This is enough to feed all of this country’s hungry children several times over.  I might be wrong, but I do not think the USA has a monopoly on waste.  I suspect that much of the western world acts in a similar manner, but surely would be interested in hearing about any green programs in your country.

I have started to go through some our cupboards and have found a few cans of ‘expired’ food that I will need to get rid of.  Although I am new to going green, I am not new to being frugal.  When I used to find a deal, I would buy in bulk.  Now that I am eating 100% healthier, these products no longer pass through my lips.  There is too much junk in much of the canned/bagged food.  This will all be eaten, composted or donated and I hope this exodus of junk food will be the last.

I have been finding some information about Food Waste Recovery, but I am still not quite sure how this works in my hometown of Fargo, ND.   I know that there are food drives and several opportunities to give food to the shelters, but I wonder if there are any programs set up to recover this wasted food.  I think I will look into that!

I guess a big part of this task is to not let it get to the point where I need to get rid of food.  Ideally, we will buy or grow what we need, eat in a manner that is not wasteful and compost what is left.  I guess the goal is to have zero waste.  I realized that as far as food product goes, we have only thrown away 1 orange peel and 2 banana peels this week.  I am going to change this though and the only reason I threw these items is because I was at work and did not think about it.  I hope Ashley cuts me some slack on that… I am just a guy.  J  We have taken some junk mail scraps, hung it on the fridge and made a list of items that are close to expiring.

All other food either ended up in our bellies, in one of our critter’s belly or in the compost.  During the summer, we bring our compost to the city compost.  During the winter, we run our Nature Mill composter.  Overall, it is turning out to be a very productive week and it feels nice to know that we were already fairly good at not wasting food.

Week 1 is almost done and still looking for great green blogs

October 22nd, 2009

As I near the end of my first weekly task, I am beginning to wonder if the internet ever runs out of information.  This week my task is to start following specific sites and also to find new blogs or sites to share with my wife.  I am beginning to experience information overload and need your help.  Can you help me find 3-5 green blogs or sites that I should pass along to my wife?

Beyond the sites she wants me to find, she also asked me to follow The Daily Green, Tree Hugger, and worldwatch.org.  She will be proud, as I have been keeping up with these sites every day.  These environmentally friendly sites have certainly been giving me plenty of information and I am learning all sorts of interesting green information.  Everything from news about green legislation to how to make paper from garbage… I am being learned in the ways of hippiedom.

After I complete all of the “required” reading, I have been looking around the internet for other interesting and unique green sites.  Among the plethora of green information I have waded through, there have been a few sites that have seemed to stand out for me.  These are not necessarily the sites I will pass along to meet my requirements, but have certainly been interesting.  First, I found Franke James and found it to be a very fun green and eco-friendly site.  Franke James is an author/artist/photographer who won me over with her visual essays that I would label as children’s book for grownups.  Pictures are always a bonus!  Check out Paradise Unpaved for a good example of her work.

I also found Go Green Street.  This site provides a variety of useful information that is organized in a manner that is very easy to navigate.   The easy navigation and great content make this site one that I will continue to visit.  Lastly, I found EnviroGadget.  I love toys and this will be a site I will continue to watch.  I noticed on the front page, they listed a solar/crank powered radio flashlight that I already own and bring ice fishing with me.  Very handy little item.

I have found a few interesting sites that give me a variety of information, but I want to make sure I am getting the best bang for my buck.  Check out the sites that I have mentioned and let me know in the comments section below if you have a great green or eco-friendly site/blog that you would recommend.  Your help is greatly appreciated!

Green Company Review Eco-dent

October 19th, 2009

Although most of my posts will relate to the weekly tasks that Ashley assigns to me, I have decided that on Mondays I will take a look at a company or organization that appears to be doing something green, environmentally friendly or healthy.  Although I am not very familiar with many green products, one item that my wife has talked me into using is Eco-denT  tooth powder in place of regular tooth paste.

I have to be honest that I do not use this all the time in place of my normal Colgate toothpaste, but use it at least once a day.  The first time I tried the Eco-dent tooth powder, it made my teeth feel more clean than usual.  I have found that the combination of Colgate in the morning and Eco-Dent in the evening makes my teeth happy.

On top of the fact that Eco-Dent makes my mouth feel like tulips in Spring, the packaging is environmentally friendly.  It is made from recycled materials and can also be recycled.  Instead of putting these containers in the recycle bin, we may keep these containers as a place to keep seeds for our garden.

This product may also be healthier for you or at least less wasteful.  Although Fluoride is healthy in small doses, it also has the potential to be toxic in large doses.   I likely get enough in the water I drink and from my visits to the dentist, so I am not really concerned about getting too little.  They claim 100% natural ingredients, no dyes or sweeteners and they promise no animal testing.

As a consumer, I would recommend Eco-dent as a company that sells an environmentally friendly product that I stand by and trust.
