Letter published in local paper about phone books

November 22nd, 2009

A quick update on my Week 2 challenge of trying to stop junk mail.  I sent in a letter to the editor at our local paper (The Fargo Forum) after being sent phone books shortly after requesting to be removed from the list.  It was published and wanted to share it with you all!  The link is here, but for those having problems with the link, I am copying the text here:

Quit sending me phone books

It would really be appreciated if the phone companies would stop sending me phone books. I have asked to have my name removed from Dex, Yellowbook and 702 Communications lists, and, not more than two weeks later, I have received phone books from Yellowbook and 702 Communications.

As I stare at the eight phone books sitting before me, I really wonder how necessary all of these are. I have used a phone book probably three times in the past year, and it was certainly handy to have on those occasions, but I do not think I need this many. Really, I could just as easily have used the Internet. I do understand why households want phone books, but can you please allow me to find numbers on the Internet?

All I really want is the ability to be removed from your lists. The resources taken to create, print and deliver these phone books are annoying for me, costly for you and a detriment to our environment. More than 100 million trees are cut down every year for junk mail, and it has been reported that 40 percent of that goes straight into the garbage. I don’t want to add to that waste.

Even if you do not agree with environmental agendas, I hope we can agree that this is wasteful. Just give me an opportunity to save you money and stop sending me phone books.

STOP SENDING ME PHONE BOOKS

November 13th, 2009

A few weeks ago my green task was to reduce junk mail.  Part of what I resolved to complete was to remove myself from the mailing list for phone books.  Of the 100 million tons of junk mail created every year, I wonder how much of that is phone books.  Well, I thought my phone book receiving days were over.  Yet… yesterday… sitting on my front porch was a Yellowbook phone book.  STOP SENDING ME PHONE BOOKS!

It was a little discouraging to see that on my stoop shortly after resolving not to receive them any longer.  Possibly I am being a bit anxious since I just put myself on the list a few weeks ago, so possibly that was the last phone book.  They were actually really awesome and sent me an email fairly quickly.  Heather from Yellowbook told me, “I have added you to our Opt Out List. In the future, we will not deliver the Yellowbook to your address but we will send out a postcard once every two years to confirm that you still reside at the same address and that you still wish to remain off of our distribution list. “I really do appreciate the try Heather and I am sure you are a very nice person, but STOP SENDING ME PHONE BOOKS!

There is a positive side to having another phone book though.   The Yellowbook phone book came in an awesome Yellowbook bag.  Even before I was trying to be green, I would re-use any plastic bags we did manage to collect and I would pick up my dog’s poop with it.   I am sure there is a better way to do that, but that is a future story.  So, the Yellowbook bag got the doo doo treatment.  I do have quite a few bags saved up though, so please do not spend your resources getting it to me and please STOP SENDING ME PHONE BOOKS!

Finally, I really do appreciate the quick service you provided and I am hoping that being removed from the list just has been a timing problem, but if not… please… with cherries on top… STOP SENDING ME PHONE BOOKS!

Week 2 – Destroying the world with junk mail

October 25th, 2009

I think Ashley might be taking it easy on me this week again.  For my first week’s task, she asked me to find interesting green websites. Let me assure you that browsing the Internet is not that difficult for me.  I am on the internet entirely too much anyways and she gave a great excuse to play on the intertubes.  Even though  I was fearful that this weeks task was going to be more painful (because I know some of them will be), once again she is being gentle on me.  The task my wife assigned for the second week is to remove my name from junk mailing lists.

Well, I am not really sure where to begin on this, but I think Ashley has done some of this already and will hopefully help me.  I know that I am currently on the national do not call list and  wonder if there is a similar list for junk mail.  That would make this week’s task so much easier.

Beyond a review of the mail I receive, I will look into the impact of mail on the environment.  I am sure that there this causes a burden on the earth and hopefully both Ashley and I will learn something and make some changes to how we use the mail system.  There may be some quasi-junk mail that I can unsubscribe to and hopefully some easy things I can do to reduce the amount of mail I receive.

I will keep you all up to date on any of the progress I make and Ashley will likely have a post or two again this week.  Thanks again for reading and please let me know in the comments below if you have any questions or suggestions.
