Even though I have gone through about half of this week without watching one second of television, I still feel like I have no time. Although the challenge is to conserve energy, I think one thing that I was hoping to get out of this would be better quality time at home. I figured I would either be spending time doing something productive or doing something with Ashley, instead we are doing the same things except with the television off. I think it is a problem of television AND computers.
Well, I cannot give up my computer time, otherwise I might lose my job. I suppose I could give up my computer time at home, but then I would have a tough time accomplishing everything I want to do for this blog and my other online addictions (Facebook/Twitter/Reddit). I suppose I could try and make my time more efficient on the computer and set goals so that this darn internet does not consume my free time. Turning off my computer would be good for the environment (and my brain) too.
I realized this last weekend that Ashley and I were sitting right next to each other playing Scrabble on Facebook. Why? We own the game. I think it would have been better to get the physical game out play it instead of interacting through our laptops.
This week started as an exercise in reducing waste, but might end up more of an examination of time management and how to best harvest all the marrow I want to squeeze out of life. Let me know any tips you have in the comment area below.

Whatever you save as an individual will be absorbed by growth. There are 50 million net additional cars on the roads every year. Individuals should try to change policy, not spend their efforts trying to “get off the grid” or such like.
I empathise and sympathise, professionally, personally and environmentally.
There might be something to be said for one in not traveling hither and thither (though I suspect trying to restrict the human urge to travel and meet others will take some doing), though the value and quality of another then suffers.
Ho hum.
All I know is that I, like many, earn some living garnering, exporting and/or matchmaking data across the ether.
Much of that ‘could’ still be done in person, so professionally at least I figure my blogging, etc spares the planet more than it imposes.
At least… I hope!
Oh I hear you. DH and I have sat side by side before on the computers. In fact I have even emailed him stuff because it’s quicker to do that than stop and talk LOL!
Now, she says, looking at the clock, I’ve started to turn off the computer at a set time in the evenings. I’m reducing my RSS feeds and set a timer for twitter / facebook time. You can get management things that track how much time you spend doing certain things on the computer – that can be an eye opener when you read the reports. There are also little gizmos where you type in your ‘time wasters’ and it asks you if you should be doing something else instead. Can’t remember the details, but you’ll find them with google.
Thing is, the internet never sleeps. There is no cut off point, nothing is ever finished, but you know, one day Life will be finished – either yours or Ashley’s and then you might regret the amount of time you spent twittering away your time together …
Thanks for all of your comments. I think I am going to spend the rest of the night away from the computer.
